Spring is fully on now. The Flower Moon had its show and I had great success with almost all of my seedlings. I couldn’t get my Tromboncino squash to sprout, so I’ll have to source better seeds next year. The last of the seedlings will go in the ground next week in the the New Deer Moon as we finally seem to be hitting regular high temperatures of 15C+ (60F) and the ground is finally warming up. I can also see the Hawthorns getting ready to burst, so I feel good about declaring it growing season.
I call this the New Deer Moon because this is when the fawns start showing up here. The deer have been more visible in the woods in the last week or so and we’ll see if I get to see any babies this spring. We have four varieties of deer in Denmark, with the Roe and Red being the most common (the Fallow and Sika less so). In general I see Roe deer the most in my local forest. I have to say that I’m privileged in that deer do not come into our garden, so I don’t have that frustration to manage. We have enough fields and open space between the forest and our little community that they generally have easier and safer places to forage. I’ve only seen deer in our yard once in the 6 years we’ve lived here. The deer in the forest are companions on our walks and a delight to experience, especially as the fawns start to show.
Here are wishes for growth and new life in the New Deer Moon.
